In one of the previous articles, we discussed ways to anonymously view stories. But peeking at competitors out of curiosity is half the battle. The real value appears when you start seeing what works for others and incorporate the best mechanics into your strategy.

Analyzing competitors' stories is not spying or copying. It is a quick way to understand what already "flies" with your audience without spending a budget on your experiments. This article presents a ready checklist to analyze any competitor in 30–40 minutes and get concrete conclusions for a content plan.

Why analyze others' stories in 2026?

Stories are the most "live" format: they show the audience's real reaction to specific mechanics, unlike the news feed, where the result is blurred by algorithms.

Competitor story analysis solves three tasks:

  • Find working formats. You see which mechanics (polls, quizzes, "swipe up," UGC) gather more reactions specifically in your niche.
  • Understand audience pains and desires. Questions in competitors' stories are a ready-made base of topics for your content.
  • Find gaps. If competitors do not cover some audience need, it is your opportunity to stand out.

At the same time, it is essential to remember the main rule: competitive analysis is not for copying but for quickly understanding what already works in the market and doing better. Chaotic content without a goal does not lead anywhere - where to start, we discussed in the article on why SMM without strategy is almost always a failure.

Checklist: 7 steps to analyze a competitor's story

Step 1. Choose 3-5 competitors

You don’t need to analyze everyone in a row. Select:

  • 2–3 direct competitors - those who sell the same thing to the same audience;
  • 1–2 "adjacent" - large brands from a neighboring niche from which you can peek at trendy mechanics.

Record them in a separate table. Conduct regular, not one-off analyses to see dynamics.

Step 2. Evaluate frequency and timing of posts

Over a week, note how many stories a competitor publishes a day and at what times. Pay attention to peaks - when the most "live" stories are released. This will suggest when your audience is most engaged.

Step 3. Analyze formats and mechanics

Go through the stories for the last 2-4 weeks and classify them:

  • Interactive: polls, quizzes, "sliders," questions, emoji reactions.
  • Sales-oriented: product demonstrations, reviews, special offers.
  • Engaging: "behind-the-scenes," personal stories, UGC from clients.
  • Navigational: "swipe up," links, calls to action.

Note the presence and diversity of mechanics: what stickers, calls, connections competitors regularly use. Regular repetition of a mechanism is an indirect sign that it works.

Step 4. Look at the funnel and retention

See how competitors build the series: a hook in the first stories, intrigue, a call to watch. Your task is to catch the storytelling structure. If the series logically leads from attention to action and competitors constantly use it, it is a working technique.

Step 5. Study how competitors communicate with the audience

Look at responses in stories, reactions to comments, tone of voice. This will show the communication style your audience expects: formal or friendly, humorous or strict.

Step 6. Fix the visual style

Note what colors, fonts, templates, and stickers the competitor uses. This doesn’t mean you need to copy it – but you'll see what visual is "read" by the audience in your niche and how to stand out against this background.

Step 7. Summarize everything in a table and draw conclusions

Fill out a table for each competitor: frequency, formats, best mechanics, visual, communication tone, gaps. Finally, answer three questions:

  • What can I implement this week?
  • Where are competitors weak - and how can I exploit it?
  • What do I do better, and how can I emphasize it?

Lifehacks that save time

  • Keep an eye on "highlights". Competitors often save their most successful stories there. It's a ready-made collection of the best formats over months.
  • Immediately record findings. Don't rely on memory - take screenshots and store them in a separate folder or board.
  • Check regularity. A one-time slice gives a picture, and weekly monitoring shows trends. Compare data by months to see where competitors are heading.
  • Remember algorithms. How stories reach the audience changes. We collected the main changes in VK, Telegram, and Instagram algorithms - it's useful to refresh the picture before analysis to correctly interpret reach.

How to turn analysis into a content plan

The most common failure is when the analysis is done, but conclusions remain in the table. To prevent this:

  1. Choose 3-5 mechanics from the analysis that best suit your brand.
  2. Plan them for the next 2 weeks.
  3. After publication, compare your indicators with competitors.
  4. Keep what worked and replace what did not get a reaction.

Competitors provide hypotheses, and you test them yourself: you implement a foreign format and see how it resonates with your audience. Here it is crucial not only to copy others' ideas but also to see your results in dynamics. One-time reach tells little - a regular picture is needed.

Instead of manually opening the accounts of each of your platforms and compiling numbers into tables, you can immediately see the growth of followers, engagement, and reaction to specific posts - Postmypost collects all this information in one window. Thus, analyzing others' stories turns into a simple sequence: you saw, implemented it yourself, saw the result.

If you need more ideas to fill a content plan after analysis, we have a ready-made material on how to grab the audience’s attention in the first three seconds.

In short

  • Analyze 3–5 competitors regularly, not once.
  • Look at frequency, formats, mechanics, retention, tone, and visuals.
  • Record findings and turn them into specific content plan items.
  • Do not copy - find gaps and do better.
  • Compare your results with competitors in dynamics, not by one slice.

Analyzing stories is not a one-time action, but a regular habit. Start with one competitor using this checklist - and in a couple of weeks, you will see which mechanics you should work with and which to discard.
